Conservation
Where appropriate, a conservation approach may be taken when dealing with your piece; this involves stabilising the textile in its current state to prevent further damage or wear. Services can include surface cleaning, couching loose threads and stitches, or stabilising holes and weak areas. We may protect fragile areas from further damage using a conservation net. In line with current practice, all our conservation work is reversible.
Reproduction
Sometimes, conserving and archiving an original piece and creating a reproduction is appropriate. We can produce a piece in authentic stitches and the original colours (as seen on the back of an item) or in the existing faded colours. We can also re-embroider sections that may have been lost, worn away, or damaged.
Cleaning
Fabrics which have not been cleaned are prone to decay from mounting or storage materials such as cardboard, wood and non-acid-free tissue paper, which can lead to irreversible damage and a short life span of the piece.
The Studio can remount work and provide acid-free and conservation-grade storage solutions.
Restoration
Restoring a piece to its former glory may involve replacing missing stitches or repairing holes in the ground fabric. Our studio staff is trained in re-weaving, strengthening and repairing canvas work.
Transfer of Embroidery
If the embroidery is in good condition but the background fabric is worn, we can transfer it to a new fabric. We have transferred ecclesiastical embroidery and organisation banners to give them a new lease on life.
Framing
We offer a finishing service which includes mounting onto museum-grade acid-free card ready for framing, lining your textile prepared for hanging, completing your unfinished embroidery, and making it up into It's a finished piece.
